POORI MASAL / POTATO MASAL

Hi All,

POORI MASAL!! It’s a traditional sidedish for poori everywhere. But I don’t like the traditional way of making this potato masal bcoz as already poori is a heavy dish and potato combination feels like very heavy and after eating I feel very drowsy and lazy L

So my masal will be always little spiced up.

I have noticed people add yellow food Colour powder while making this gravy to give a appetizing look,But I never add food colour in any of my cooking as it is very very harmful to health.I add turmeric powder a pinch higher to give nice yellow colour.

Here the recipe for you,

INGREDIENTS :

Onion – 1 big

Tomato – 1 medium sized.

Green chillies – 2 to 3 nos.

Curry leaves – a sprig.

Potato – 4 nos.

Ginger ½ “ piece – 1 no.

Garlic – 4 pods.

Roasted channa dal – 2 tsp

Oil – 2 tsp

coriander leaves  -  a bunch.

Salt – as required.

Mustard  - ¼ tsp

PREPARATION :

1) Grind Ginger garlic to fine paste.

2) Grind roasted channa dal to fine powder.

3) Boil potatoes till soft and peel the skin , mash them well to form a mass.

4) Chop the onions , green chilles,tomatoes .

5) In a wide pan add oil followed by mustard , when they splutter add onions , green chilles ,curry leaves and saute till onions turn translucent. Then add ginger garlic paste and fry till the raw smell of ginger garlic leaves the pan.

6) When done add tomatoes and fry till mushy , Now add the mashed potatoes ,3 cups of water and mix well.

7) Add turmeric powder , channa dal powder , salt and boil well till the powders blend with masal well.

8) When the masal reaches required consistency , garnish with coriander leaves and switch off the flame.

9) Serve hot with Pooris. The sidedish goes well with chapathi , idli and dosa too.

NOTES :
1) After cooling down masal will thickens more so remove from flame before gravy thickens.
2) You can add a pinch of yellow food colour also to get nice bright yellow colour , but I strongly insist don't add it as it is very harmful to health.

KADAMBA / KANAVA MASALA /SQUID FISH CURRY

Hi, Sea has lot of creatures in it that we can cook and we were much more unaware of many . Squid fish is one among the yummy species which I was totally unaware even after coming to Chennai. One day in market I saw them and surprised that they are selling octopus ( it looked like that to me :)). Then I surfed in net and found actually they are squid ( kadamba / kanava) and not octopus , My friend Saranya cooked this gravy for us during her visit to our home .I copied the recipe from her and tried next week itself.Though the squid fish looks very weird the taste was so yummy and there is no fish odor in that.It just tasted like mutton. The cleaning part is little tricky but easy, I suggest once you finished cleaning dispose the waste immediately out of your house as the waste from squid fish is very smelly and also it starts leaving water .So dispose the waste of squid as quick as possible. Other than that the fish tastes heaven , spicy, yummy and very easy to cook. I have
